This letter is signed by 24 social movements from different countries that on previous occasions have requested the end of the Lawfare against Venezuela. Our America, September 01, 2022

Mr. Joe Biden To the President of the United States

C.C. Mr. Antony Bliken To the United States Secretary of State

Request for the release of Diplomat Alex Saab

A little more than two years ago, on June 12, 2020, the Special Envoy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and Ambassador Plenipotentiary to the African Union, Alex Saab, was illegally detained in the Republic of Cape Verde. Much has been claimed to the Government of Cape Verde, that following the directives of the imperial power that you head, about the illegal detention of Alex Saab: they grossly violated the Vienna Convention of 1961 which guarantees diplomatic immunity for all members of all diplomatic missions of all countries of the world. Moreover, they used a Red Alert issued incorrectly and cancelled on June 25, 2020 by the issuing entity, INTERPOL.

You are well aware that from then on Cape Verde ignored all resolutions, recommendations and opinions of several regional and international bodies: two judgments of the Court of Justice of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), four rapporteurs and a Working Group of the United Nations Human Rights Council, the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights, among others.

None of this mattered to them because the decision was made from the first day of confinement and it was not taken precisely in Cape Verde but in Washington, DC, which cared little about the universal law of human rights, the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations or the United Nations. Venezuelan Diplomat Alex Saab is detained (and now locked up) in the USA in conditions that constitute torture, for no legal reason but as part of the fourth generation war that, by mandate of the most voracious economic groups, has been executed against the Venezuelan people since the unforgettable Hugo Chavez won the elections for the first time in December 1998.

From day one until today, without interruption, an endless number of attacks, defamatory campaigns, embargoes, robberies, sabotage, street violence, coup attempts, demolition of the national currency through speculative maneuvers and much more have been deployed against the Venezuelan people and its Bolivarian government.

Few like you are in a position to know this given the continuity your government gave to Donald Trump's brutal offensive, confessed by thug John Bolton in an unquestionable way.

We, the undersigned, affirm that Alex Saab is a political prisoner of the Empire; that he is being punished for his extraordinary contribution to the legitimate struggle of the Venezuelan people and government to break the blockade so that there is no lack of food, fuel, medicines and the most basic supplies to face the COVID-19 pandemic and the infamous economic blockade.

Saab's case fits without any doubt into the molds of the political war with judicial instruments that the US and the sepoy governments have unleashed in recent years as the main way of exercising domination over our peoples. Lula was not imprisoned for being a thief but to prevent him from winning the elections in Brazil. Now even the Superior Court of Justice of Brazil accepts that Judge Sergio Moro acted against the law, the same as the former Vice President of Ecuador Jorge Glass or the Vice President of Argentina, Amado Boudou or the Social Leader Milagro Sala who counts six long years of imprisonment in the hands of a Judiciary totally aligned with the right-wing governor Gerardo Morales.

Alex Saab is imprisoned for being part of the popular movement that seeks liberation, dignity and a good life for our peoples. His imprisonment is not only a serious violation of the most elementary legal order, but also a recognition of his ethics and coherence. Our recognition and gratitude goes to him for his firmness and coherence.

Contextualizing is always our task because the Empire always wants to show a snapshot and not the historical process. But the facts are stubborn, in the midst of the pandemic Venezuela suffered the aggravation of the criminal blockade, that is why it exercised, exercises and will exercise the right to the legitimate defense of national sovereignty and the self-determination of its people.

In the event of a contradiction of rights, the rights of the peoples always take precedence, not only because of what is written in international conventions, but also because of an Ius Cogen that indicates the duty of the peoples to defend their sovereignty as the only way to constitute and defend their national identity.

Alex Saab did not commit any crime, on the contrary, he exercised the noblest of human behaviors, to give himself for the most, for those who have nothing more than the Homeland and their own self-organization.

For all the above reasons, we demand the immediate release of Venezuelan diplomat Alex Saab.
